What is Scheduled Auto Maintenance?

As a vehicle owner it is crucial to remember that your car relies on you to stay healthy, just as you rely on it to take you to school, work and anywhere else you may need to go. If you check your owner's manual you will find a service schedule that dictates what services are needed and at at what mileage point. There are many different maintenances that will need to be completed in order to keep your car in the best shape possible. The most frequent service that your car will need is an oil change.

Oil Change

An oil change is often completed between every 3,000 and 5,000 miles, depending on your particular vehicle. So cars and trucks are able to go much farther than that, but many technicians don't recommend this and suggest coming in at the above mileage points. Oil changes ensure proper engine lubrication and the oil change process helps to clean out the engine and restore performance and fuel efficiency.

Fluid Services

Aside from oil vehicles use several different types of specialized fluids to operate their various systems. On occasion these liquids need to be drained and replaced to ensure they are free of any contaminants. This process is called a fluid flush. Commonly a vehicle will need a cooling system flush, power steering flush, different flush, brake fluid flush and a transmission fluid flush, more on the latter in a moment.

Timing Belt Replacement

If your car uses a timing belt, opposed to a timing chain, it will need to be replaced at the recommended mileage, or else you run the risk of the belt snapping. If the belt were to snap it would allow the inner-working of the engine to grind together out of sync, resulting in massive damage to the motor. Most timing belt procedures are completed between 75,000 and 100,000 miles.

Transmission Service

As mentioned the transmission requires a fluid flush to keep the car shifting smooth. It also needs a few other services, including a pan gasket replacement to prevent leaks and if applicable, a new transmission filter.

30/60/90K Maintenance

Numerous other services are completed at 30,000 mile intervals. Commonly this scheduled maintenance includes new spark plugs and spark plug wires, fuel filters, air filters, computer diagnostics, safety checks and more.
